1.
Narrator: Once upon a time, there was a small cloudy town, with beautiful houses and chimneys that smoked from day to night. The narrow tiled roads echoed from the voices of the outdoor market every evening. The people of the town lived happily and peacefully, despite the Mayor’s presence that darkened their lives. Still they kept on going about their business, with their heads down until night fall.
2.
Overture 03:02
3.
Narrator: Everything seemed calm and in order. The only neglected building was the old Orphanage in the furthest point of the town. Some may still recall the image of a young girl with sad eyes, in a rusty wheel chair, sitting by the big attic window, observing life outside of the Orphanage walls. They even say, she used to sing a sad tune going something like this…
4.
Little Annie 04:12
-Annie: Fading light Frozen feelings lying in this room Awakening all my memories All I see Are all the things I know that I can’t do My desires are now my enemies I’m flying away, These walls can’t hold me back from my dreams ’Cause I know freedom is what my heart needs I wait for the day that my dreams will set me free from my chains But I know there are so many things I’ll have to change Silence cries Those bleeding shadows in my soul Are trying to burn my wings again Though I know I’ll find a way to break through In the end My deepest fears still hold me back I’m flying away, these walls can’t hold me back from my dreams ’Cause I know freedom is what my heart needs I wait for the day, that my dreams will set me free from my chains But I know there’re so many things I’ll have to change
5.
Narrator: The Orphanage barely covered its expenses. The town’s Mayor, Drop D, was very cunning indeed. He made sure all the money intended for the Orphanage ended up in his pockets. Everyone in town was aware that he and the Orphanage’s Director embezzled the money intended for food and heating for the Institution. Yet they still silently paid the unfair taxes imposed by the Mayor, supposedly for the needs of the Orphanage. Due to the poor living conditions inside the Orphanage, the most courageous boys would sneak out and plunder the market stalls, in an effort to ease their hunger. One rainy afternoon, the police officer on patrol of the market, managed to corner the young boys in an alley. This time, they were in big trouble… when suddenly a shadowy figure appeared behind the boys…
6.
Mr. Funker 04:26
Mr. Funker: Do you see me? Can you hear me? What do you think? Am I a freak? Kind of creepy, A little tricky But if you cheat on me I’ll steal your dreams So come on, You think you’re strong You think you’re the only one Who knows what’s right and wrong But when you come around, you’ d better not be found ‘Cause I will punish you for what you’ve done My name is Funker, Mr. Funker Mirror of reality, power of will Mr. Funker, my name is Funker Everything you need is hiding in your dreams Under the moonlight My shadow’s outline Brings your sins to light, Betraying who you truly are If you’re righteous No one can touch you I’ve trained my self to live in this insanity Breaking away now Of my fragile cage I’m standing in front of you, Now tell me what you see My eyes are full of blood, My heart is full of tears, What a tragic circumstance Awakens now your fears Policeman: You know you can’t fight the law You know you can’t mess with D. Mr. Funker: I just know I can fight you! So… Run!
7.
Narrator: The boys didn’t realize what had happened. The only thing they recall was the terrified look of the Policeman when he came face to face with the mysterious shadow. And his terror was such, that when the boys walked right past him to escape, he didn’t move a muscle to stop them. Next morning, the policeman went to the Mayor numbed, nervous and ashamed.
8.
Drop D. 05:19
Policeman: I’ve chased the children And I was close I’m not a liar I’ve seen the ghost But in the alley I couldn’t speak As he condemned me For all of my sins I still remember his burning eyes Drop D: Don’t tell me lies I fear no heroes falling from the skies Policeman: This shadow haunts me Day and night Fear is growing Blurs my mind He said he’ll find you He feels no fear But in the darkness He disappeared I can’t escape his raging sight Drop D: Don’t tell me lies I fear no heroes falling from the skies
9.
Narrator: Drop D was now one hundred percent certain that the only way to get rid of these young punks of the Orphanage, pillaging the market and spoiling his image and reputation, was to keep them locked inside no matter the cost. As for the “scary shadow” that the Policeman described so vividly, he was almost certain that it was nothing more than a cheap trick from the boys in order to escape. Maybe it was some other local crook who was helping them out in order to share their loot. So he started out, angry and determined to find the Principal of the Orphanage. If she still wanted to keep her position in the Institution and share some of the donation money with him, she would have to at least teach these young boys a lesson. When he entered her office, she knew she had it coming…
10.
Orphanrage 04:58
Drop D: This place is mine, belongs to me I won’t allow this anarchy I’ve spent all of my life My sleep and my pride I’m so deep in the ocean of my mind and I can’t escape I found the children’s trace Down in the marketplace They are breaking, teasing, stealing Running, hiding, trying to win this game In total isolation all these children should be kept Come on lock them down, lock them down And never let them go to town Now that all is done, we better have some fun Here is what we’ll do, just let them miss their food Now that all is done, let’s make them miss the sun That’s the price they’ll pay, so don’t you hesitate Damn, what else could I do? They have to see I am no fool I’ll never set them free until they learn to obey me And if you don’t do as I say Then you know I’ll come your way I won’t put up with this misbehavior for another day Now let’s have some fun That’s the price they’ll pay Let them miss their sun Miss the sun…
11.
Narrator: When he was reassured that the kids would stay locked in their rooms and that the Principal would abide by the strict punishment he enforced, Drop D rushed off to his mansion. His sole desire was to lay on his soft comfortable bed and forget all this nuisance caused by the little devils. So he closed his eyes and surrendered to sleep. As he drifted off, a weird dream started to form in his mind. He found himself in an empty room standing in front of a mirror. Yet he looked different. All of a sudden he felt that the image he was looking at, this ugly, miserable and cold face was his own soul staring back at him. He reached out his hand to touch his reflection, but instead of being able to touch the hard glass surface, Drop D started sinking and getting pulled inside the mirror. He screamed for help, but strangely no sound came out. Then, all of a sudden, a shadow approached him. When Mr. Funker grabbed his arm, Drop D wondered whether he was there to help him, or punish him for the ugliness of his soul. Inside his mind, the weird voice of Funker started echoing...
12.
Mr. Funker: When you close your eyes Feel devoid of your ambitions When your walls will crumble and fall You will be shaken to the core So tell me how it feels Standing there in front of me When your power and greed Don’t mean a thing to me I am the punishment I am the mirror Now you’re under control I’ll reveal your soul There’s no one to hear your prayers Dreams are turning into nightmares And all that you possess All these goods and wealth All the power you wield Has no effect on me Now is the time to Give back all that you stole To let go all you should never own Now your kingdom fades away There’s no one to hear your prayers Dreams are turning into nightmares
13.
Narrator: The rise of the next morning found the whole town in awe. Almost every shop in the market had received orders from the Mayor for food and candy to be delivered to the Orphanage by noon. Most of the people could not believe the sudden generosity of the Mayor, but his personal stamp was an indisputable proof that it was all his doing. Others joked that it was the weird shadow that had spared the kids the other day, which had caused Drop D to become so generous. Maybe Mr. Funker had magical powers and could make people change after all.
14.
The Myth 03:56
Narrator: Come up to the roof to see the freak He’s running like a shadow, like a thief He’s as fast as a lion when he hunts He always gets what he wants from you. But if he ever comes across your way Don’t try to hide, or even run away ‘Cause he will find you, and he will reveal Your worst nightmares, your inmost fear He’s the mocking voice inside your head So while you sleep he lies under your bed He reads the deepest thoughts in your mind In that respect he is one of a kind. And when you look deep into his eyes There’s no mercy, there’s no disguise With him your secrets may be safe But in the end it’s yourself you cannot escape. If you’re playing hide and seek Just remember he’s a freak, a freak!
15.
Narrator: As far as the children in the Orphanage were concerned, their joy was beyond measure when they gazed upon the dining hall tables filled with delicious edibles and the Principal waiting for them with a smile on her face and a cheerful mood. They kept wondering how yesterday’s punishment was so easily forgotten by the Mayor and why would he offer them with such a rich meal the day after? Behind their smiles doubts crept in that sooner or later they would pay a big price for this plentiful table. And even though their hunger and deprivation for so many months led them to rush to the food with eagerness, their thoughts remained clouded and their look troubled. Deep down they knew that their hopes for the Mayor to change and consequently for their own lives to change, were false.
16.
False Hopes 03:39
Narrator: You’re wishing for a better luck Hoping for a chance to change your life But you still know that nothing good comes Without giving your own fight Don’t turn a blind eye to all that’s wrong Brighten up the world that you belong You’ve always wanted so much more But now you know you’ll have to pay for When you close your eyes Then you choose to live in lies Won’t you realize? False hopes, all you have Like a dream built on the sand Don’t you realize?
17.
Narrator: And so it was. The storm quickly came. At night fall, the first salesmen came knocking on Drop D’s door demanding payments for the orders he made. Drop D’s eyes turned cold once he saw the orders with his personal seal on them. A seal he never recalled putting himself. Suddenly the dream of Mr. Funker pulling him by the hand flashed before his eyes. But he soon rejected the strange thoughts forming in his mind. No one else could have put his seal on these orders. The ring was still on his finger and always had been. The wave of rage emerging from his eyes was so frightening that it drove the salesmen away without saying a word. Outraged, Drop D grabbed his coat and set a course for the Orphanage. By now he was certain that these brats set him up and the only one who knew how they planned the whole thing including escaping from their rooms was Annie. She was the only one they confided in and came for advice when they wanted to get away from this hideous and miserable Institution. Firstly, he asked the Principal to lock them up in their rooms and let them starve unless they confess their guilt. Then he started looking for the cunning little girl. When he opened the attic door where she lived secluded from the rest of the kids, Annie gazed back at him coldly without a glimpse of fear in her eyes…
18.
Annie: Why did you come to me? How can I make you see? Drop D: There are secrets you hide, these thoughts you keep inside I feel it, I know, your eyes will never show Annie: There’s nothing left to say Drop D: Something is haunting me in my dreams There’s no place to hide from my fears You are the only one to know How could I be again free from pain I think I’m insane Pale reflections arise All I’ve ever done was satisfying my desires Annie: Time to face your own lies Drop D: For all the pain I have caused, I feel ashamed Still I stay the same... Annie: You chose your own way Drop D: Lost inside my mind’s games, I never saw That I could be so wrong… Annie: You always knew Drop D: Now I reach out to you, I need your help To show me the truth Annie: You are the one to blame You will never be the same Drop D: For my mistakes and my rage Now it’s time for me to pay I hear you, now I see, the blame is on me Annie: There’s no way back from here Drop D: Something is haunting me in my dreams There’s no place to hide from my fears You are the only one to know How could I be again free from pain I think I’m insane
19.
Narrator: Drop D came out of the attic confused. Annie’s words, the way she looked at him, made him loose his mind and his temper. He started to see himself for who he truly was, all the ugliness of his soul. He began to run through the hallways of the building in desperation. He was looking around him without being able to truly see. It felt as though he didn’t know where he really was. Suddenly he heard a familiar voice calling him. He was almost certain it was the voice of the shadow, Mr. Funker talking to him from behind a half open door. The room was dusty and had mirrors everywhere, mirrors forgotten from the time when the building was used as a mirror factory. A shadow quickly passed behind him and by the time Drop D managed to recover from the shock, he found himself staring at his reflection in the mirror, like it was in his dream. But this time, Mr. Funker was standing behind him.
20.
Drop D: Tell me, what’s inside this? Tell me, what I’m here for Show me, what’s behind this Fearless I feel no more You were always hiding Deep inside my mind’s thoughts Time to take your mask off I can’t believe that you’re real Mr. Funker: You always believed That’s easier to blame than to forgive You’re a shadow in the sun Just before it goes down Mirror of reality… Don’t live just for pleasure Make your life a treasure True lies always garbling Damned is this reflection of you Drop D: Get out of my sight Get out of my mind and disappear You’ve always been wrong And now it’s so clear I’m back in the dark My greyhounds are always there to bark Get out of my way Get out of my mind I live in lies (I live in lies) I have no hope (a man without a soul) I live in lies (I live in lies) I have no choice (vanity at all)
21.
Awareness 01:51
Narrator: The Major’s voice echoed no longer in the hallways of the Orphanage. The children, who were hiding in their rooms, started wondering why Drop D wanted to find Annie so desperately. And they suddenly realized that she might had gaped them. And if so, if Annie had told Drop D all of the boys’ cheatings, then their punishment would be even harder. Some of the children, certain that she had gotten the part of the Major so as to escape her own punishment, started talking against Annie. After a while everyone got carried away, and started heading to her room full of rage, determined to reveal her treason. When they opened the door of her dark room, they saw the outline of a shadow sitting on the wheel chair. The children’s words were so harsh and unfair. They were trying to express their anger, the injustice they were feeling deep inside. As their accusations were becoming more and more severe, the shadow started budging. But all of a sudden, the children got frozen, when, instead of Annie, they saw a weird figure getting up of the wheel chair and coming out of the dark. Mr. Funkers’ eyes full of rage and his spooky voice, his words confused the children. He started walking towards them, in a more and more aggressive way, until his angry mind got blurred by all of these lies against Annie. He grabbed a boy’s neck with fierce and started squeezing. The boy got paralyzed by fear… But Mr. Funker wouldn’t let him off his hands… until a voice echoed in his head… “Annie Stop!”
22.
Final Act 06:55
Annie: Words once spoken now drawn out Silent blames, a growing doubt Live in the shadows, all alone As if you’ve always been disowned Mr. Funker: I’m not the one I used to be I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel You watch me change in front of your eyes I take off my disguise I tried so hard to be your hero I’m not the law, I’m just a mirror In Final Act your life’s reflection Is all that’s left in your heart Now you have to see the world through my eyes Time to face the truth in your own lies I don’t know why I act this way I must escape from my confusion This lack of vision is blurring my soul Like a fever burning for more I think it’s time to make things right and pay the price, take back what’s mine A world of justice, without sins or lies Now you have to see the world through my eyes Time to face the truth in your own lies
23.
Closure 02:10
Narrator: When she heard someone calling her name, Annie stood petrified. She looked around her confused as she was and immediately let go of the young boy who was almost unconscious. She could not believe it… So, she was Funker… She was the one sneaking out every night, wandering on the roof tops. She began to recall the events of the past few days as images formed in her mind. She recalled the old broken window in the attic from which she’d run out to follow the boys to the market every time they went stealing. She remembered the frightened policeman in the alley staring at her in terror and surprise. Drop D on his bed, and her hand pulling his ring off of his finger. Their confrontation in the mirror room and the broken sight of the broken Mayor, after she had revealed to him all the ugliness of his soul! And then, at first hesitantly, nd then more and more boldly, she stood up! The children stared confused, as she started walking towards the attic window. Annie knew everything now. Her love and will to help these children was so big that it had made her overcome all of her fears and weaknesses. And Mr. Funker was no other than her self… For the last time she looked at the children. Now they knew as well, that nothing is impossible, that no barrier was enough to stop them. That they could claim a better life without feeling weak. Their eyes followed her sight as she faded through the trees that spread beneath the old Orphanage, while the sun was rising. Her song, as well as Mr. Funker’s Myth remained forever in the hearts of the villagers in this small town…
24.
Whispers 02:49
Annie: Years have passed before my eyes but now I see so clear All you have to do is close your eyes and try to hear The whispers in your heart that tell you You don’t have to go far to see All you’ll ever need is here… Days go by and though you try it seems it’s all in vain Don’t regret for things you’ve never done ’cause what remains Is the whisper in your heart that tells you You don’t have to go far to see All you’ll ever need is here… On and on, you keep on trying for things you can’t achieve Close your eyes, and all you have to do is just believe The whispers in your heart that tell you You don’t have to go far to see All you’ll ever need is here…
